Six Pallet Racking Dos and Don’ts

If managed correctly, pallet racking systems can improve efficiency and help companies manage their business effectively. By using the maximum storage space available, products can be stored in an organised and easy to locate manner, which can improve delivery times and staff productivity.

Large warehouses can be hazardous if not managed properly, and faulty shelving or badly fitted or erected shelving can collapse, damaging produce, equipment or even staff members, so ensuring the racking is up to the job is essential.

Space

The available space will determine the best pallet racking system for each individual business. For example, if products are stored and moved using a forklift truck, there needs to be enough space between the racking to pass by.

Weight

Ensure that the racking is fit for purpose and capable of holding the required weight. This will avoid overloading the shelving and any unwanted consequences.

Choices

A popular system is the teardrop-style racks, which are interchangeable with most manufacturers’ teardrop systems and are good for loading and unloading at different angles.

Structural or Double Deep

Structural racking is made of structural steel, bolted to upright beams, and can carry weights up to 20,000 pounds, so good for heavier loads.

Double Deep offer eleven-foot aisles which can be positioned back to back, resulting in increased capacity whilst being accessed by only one aisle.

Pallet Flow or Push back

Often used by the food industry, pallet flow allows for the produce at the back to be first out, so perfect if you need rotation of your products or if they have sell-by dates.

The push back system allows for up to six pallets and uses a first-in, last-out system, giving operators flexibility.

Security

Always check what fire and damage precautions are installed, and if necessary get a sprinkler system fitted.

Always check the racks are erected correctly and ensure regular safety checks are carried out with any damage reported straight away. Ensure all workers know the rules, wear the correct clothing and hold the required licences for operating any equipment.
